Kosovo to begin CEFTA negotiations

Prishtinë, June 29, 2006 - Kosovo will attend the first round of the negotiations of the Central Europe Free Trade Agreement (CEFTA). The Coordinator of Stability Pact for Kosovo, Gazmend Qorraj, said this agreement would have positive effects in political and economic areas.

“Although Kosovo’s status has not been determined yet, this agreement will contribute to stability in Kosovo and will give a message to the European countries that Kosovo is an equal partner,” said Qorraj.

According to Qorraj, Serbia cannot be an obstacle to this agreement since CEFTA is under the supervision of the Stability Pact and the European Commission. “This and other agreements will be under the supervision of the EC, Stability Pact and other international mechanisms. The agreement will be implemented despite Serbia’s efforts to delay it,” said Qorraj.

The agreement in general and its annexes will be discussed during the next days in Brussels. Andreas Wittkowsky from UNMIK Pillar IV will lead the delegation, which will consist of Gazmend Qorraj, Ejup Fejza from the MTI’s Investments Promotion Agency and Blerim Burjani, Advisor to Minister of Trade and Industry Bujar Dugolli.
